Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral therapy was developed from discoveries about the body’s subtle physiology made by osteopaths about 100 years ago. It is a unique approach to health and healing, a practice which works with the whole person in a subtle yet profound manner. Each cell in our body expresses subtle rhythms. This continual movement, rather like tides in the ocean, is the subtlest rhythm in our body – more subtle than the heartbeat or the rise and fall of our breath. It is generated by the flow of cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord, the central nervous system and involves all tissues in the body.
These inherent motions are of vital importance to our health - the body and the mind. However, in the course of a lifetime one can experience trauma – both physical and emotional which can disrupt this harmony. Likewise, different kinds of stress over a period of time produce cumulative effects in the body and are held in the tissues. The therapist listens with her fingers to these rhythms determining where and how they are out of balance. Using gentle contact and perceptual awareness – which may be at the head or any other part of the body - the therapist facilitates tissue and energy release encouraging the body’s own capacity for self-healing.
The fundamental key to Craniosacral Therapy is that Health is never lost! In sharp contrast to traditional medicine, it looks at the health of a person rather than pathology. Being present for the health of a person, the therapist’s hands reflect back to the body its inherent wisdom to heal itself.
Personal experience
When I receive craniosacral therapy myself, it is like being held and listened to in a way rarely felt – it is a home-coming astonishingly in one’s own body. The touch is so light and spacious and yet so profound – a sense of the whole of me – body, mind and spirit – being held. Slowly you become aware that below all the busyness of one’s mind or perceived aches and pains in the body, there is a deep presence of Intelligence at work. One might feel heat or tingling and can share with the therapist or not, anything observed in the body. Sometimes emotions rise to the surface - this is normal as things resolve themselves.
The benefits at the conclusion of a treatment include:
- a profound sense of well-being and relaxation
- a feeling of being energized, more vital
- a clarity about the next step in one’s life...

The human body, at peace with itself,
Is more precious than the rarest gem.
Cherish your body, it is yours this one time only.
The human form is won with great difficulty,
it is easy to lose.
All worldly things are brief, like lightening in the sky;
This Life you must know as the tiny splash of a raindrop;
a thing of beauty that disappears even as it comes into being.
Therefore set your goal,
Make use of every day and night to achieve it.
